5 Fun & Easy Ways To Meet People While Traveling Solo

If you’re traveling alone, you might be pondering how to meet people along the way. If you’re curious about how to make friends when traveling, consider these five suggestions…

1. Live in a hostel.

Staying at social hostels is one of the simplest methods to meet new people when traveling alone. I’m not a big fan of hostels, but I can’t deny the social benefits!

If you’re shy about approaching strangers, look for individuals who are alone (rather than approaching a large group that is already conversing). Hostels are famed for their social environment, and you’ll quickly make friends with whom to travel or have a meal.

2. Stick to the backpacker trail.

If your destination has a “backpacker trail,” chances are you will encounter other travelers by following it. This could be a popular route or a popular activity that all travelers participate in.

You’ll meet a lot of people if you follow the backpacker path, and this is a wonderful option if you want to find individuals to travel with in the future.

3. Participate in an activity.

Another excellent technique to make new acquaintances while traveling is to participate in a group activity where you can quickly meet new people. This has worked great for me in the past!

Language classes, walking tours, day trips, dance courses… these are just a few examples of activities where you might meet other visitors.

4. Download Traveling Apps

For introverts, a carefully chosen app can be a quick and straightforward method to find other people to travel with — whether you’re looking for someone to join you on a two-day hike into the rainforest, or someone to visit Africa with for four months.

There are many apps to select from, but we believe Backpackr is the best. You can use the app to compare other backpackers’ trip plans and itineraries to see whether they match yours. And because it’s one of the most popular, you’ll be able to meet other travelers in practically any location.

For all you solo female travelers who are worried about unwanted attention, you can configure  Backpackr to only contact other female travelers.
Alternatively, try Tourlina: it’s the first female-only app that helps you meet people while traveling.

5. Make use of social media.

Finally, social networking is a great way to meet new people when traveling!

There are numerous Facebook communities for travelers, particularly lone female travelers. Expat/traveler Facebook communities for specific destinations are also available.

While I have not personally met friends while traveling in this way, I know many individuals who have. If you don’t know anyone in a city, this can be a terrific way to meet people.
